I'd add one thing...

Acknowledging that things were different in a different time also isn't excusing or accepting it as acceptable per today's standards. We've seemingly replaced context for feelings nowadays....but we also tend to do this to current events as well.

And before someone brings up statues...I couldn't give a rat's ass about them. I think all statues are for the most part strange and creepy and see no need to give special reverence to any of them.
